Is a Conference the Same as a Convention?
August 29th, 2011 / 1:49 am
Is a conference the same as a convention? Not really. A convention has the connotation of a holiday where conventioneers party the night away and may attend a meeting or two and visit exhibition booths to see the latest products on display. For academics, though, going to a conference is an opportunity to share ideas, research results and new ways of thinking about a discipline

What is Knowledge Management?

The first meeting of the SCILS Knowledge Institute will be held:

Tuesday, September 23, 12 noon - 1:30 PM Faculty Lounge, Room 323

You are invited but you may have a few questions about the Institute or its mission.

Q & A's --------What is "Knowledge Management" (KM)?

Knowledge management (KM) is the process by which people in organizations find, share, and develop knowledge for action. KM affects performance by influencing work relationships to enhance learning and decision making. The understanding of people, processes and technologies can foster effective work practices, especially in knowledge-based organizations.

-----------------What's the relationship between the Knowledge Institute at Rutgers and KM in organizations?

The Knowledge Institute is a research center that brings together students and faculty researchers and practitioners so that theory can be applied to practical applications in organizations.

----------------What's on the agenda for the Knowledge Institute's September 23rd meeting?

We'll discuss recent and ongoing projects:
- Information Architecture website project funded by the National Science Foundation
- Work with the Family Health Care Research Network to study knowledge management in family health care with particular emphasis on Diabetes care.

This will be an interactive meeting where we'll be asking people to give advice on future directions and on possible knowledge communities that we can tap for collaborations. There will be an opportunity to sign on as an Institute affiliate to be involved in future initiatives.

We'll distribute our first newsletter with Information about the Institute as well as tips and weblinks related to KM.

-------------Why should I come to the Knowledge Institute meeting?

- Well, most people eat lunch anyway, so why not join others, meet new people at SCILS, and learn something while munching.
- This is an organization for everyone at SCILS. We're all involved in using information to create knowledge and to share knowledge in one form or another. Maybe you'll get a new idea to help with your studies or research.
- The KI is something new. It's usually interesting to be in on the ground floor of any endeavor and feel like you've help "grow" something of value.
- Your ideas will be heard and appreciated. We're looking for participation.

Bring your laptop...bring your bag lunch...bring yourself and join us.
