Society as Library
In keeping with the nature of a blog, I just wanted to jot down a single observation regarding the concept of library and its growing presence within industrialized nations. A common definition for the term library is: a place in which literary, musical, artistic, or reference materials (as books, manuscripts, recordings, or films) are kept for use but not for sale or a collection of such materials. The obvious point is that digital technology has allowed for searchable databases, lists, indices, and tables in which labels pertaining to content can easily be accessed. The higher rates of consumption of media is most likely mutually reinforcing this increase in use of personal digital library technology within our daily lives. The structure and inherent efficiencies of this technology seems a contemporary extension of the ideas sociologist Max Weber applied to the structure of bureaucracy and the process of rationalization within society. Whereas during his lifetime the term "iron cage" most accurately reflected the possible conclusion to changes brought about by the industrial revolution, today a "iCage" may be a more appropriate term for our increasing reliance and eventual imprisonment to the efficiencies and rationalization of library organization. How will we understand new experiences if they are unable to fit in our queue, folder, album, or playlist?
