Kraten puts spin on device skins

While Kraten admits the textures and intricacies in his art are somewhat lost in gadget wraps, he says it allows his art to be seen and used in an unconventional manner.

"Having art on things like phones brings an identity to the devices," Kraten said.

That connection between a person and their electronics, such as a cell phone, was analyzed by two professors, James E. Katz and Satomi Sugiyama, in the 2005 paper "Mobile Phones as Fashion Statements."

"The telephone has become mobile ? it is taken out of our 'back stage' areas of the home to the 'front stage' of public life, where many onlookers can observe the self-presentation of others," the report said.
