Dr. Jeffrey D. Robinson (Associate Professor, Department of

Communication, Rutgers University) used ISIPS funds to advance his research program on

privacy between primary-care physicians and patients.  Specifically,

Dr. Robinson is examining how and why patients' (genuine) medical

concerns do not emerge during visits, as well as physicians'

communication practices that inhibit or encourage patients' disclosure

of such concerns.  Dr. Robinson's research focuses on both verbal and

nonverbal communication.  ISIPS funding helped to support two publications:

Robinson, J. D. (2006). Nonverbal communication and physician-patient

interaction: Review and new directions.  Handbook of Nonverbal

Communication (pp. 437-459).  Sage Publications.

Heritage, J., & Robinson, J. D. (2006).  The structure of patients’

presenting concerns 1:  Physicians’ opening questions.  Health

Communication, 19, 89-102.
