Paul Raff

Paul is the Post-Doctoral Fellow at the LAIR Lab researching Cognitive Assistants as Analyst's Deputies funded by the IC Post Doctoral Fellowship Program. Previously, Paul earned a BS/MS in Mathematics and a BS in Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. Paul's research interests include dynamic graph theory, formal proof, and automated enumeration. The recurring theme around his research is to utilize computers and massive computation techniques not only for the discovery of new mathematical ideas, but also for the underlying formal proof in these new ideas. Paul and his wife currently live in Philadelphia, PA, and he is an avid triathlete in the small amounts of free time that he has.

Catherine L. Smith

Smith Pic

Catherine L. Smith finished her doctoral degree at SC&I in May 2009. Her research investigated the psychology of interactive information search. She is interested in the relationships between: (1) cues produced by search systems in their responses to users, (2) how people respond to search system cues (user behaviors), and (3) how prior experience with a system or a topic affects users' beliefs and behaviors. Cathy uses factorial experiments to discover and understand these relationships. Her work is intended to provide insights to system designers who need a better understanding of how people use interactive search systems. She is continuing her work at SC&I on a project funded by Google and lead by Nina Wacholder.
