Name:  Paola

SC&I major: Communication

Other majors and minors:  Double major in Sociology

I expect to graduate:  May 2008

Why I chose my SC&I major:  Majoring in Communication has given me a broad understanding of people. It has enhanced my ability to consider other perspectives and to go beyond expectations
through written and verbal communication.

Extracurricular activities:  President, Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA)

My goals:  I aspire to be a leader in the field of communication. I envision a future where through communication I will be able to make a difference in the world.

What I like about SC&I and Rutgers:  Rutgers has truly provided me with countless leadership opportunities.  It has in many ways encouraged me to persevere and succeed.  And SC&I has welcomed me with open arms and believed in what I had to offer as a leader.

Some thoughts I’d like to share with fellow students:  If I had to share a piece of advice with students, I would say look for and recognize opportunities while exceeding expectations.

Name:  Kimberly

SC&I major:  Communication

Other majors and minors:  Psychology minor

I expect to graduate:  January 2008

Why I chose my SC&I major:  My Intro to Communication courses gave me my first taste of a then unfamiliar concept: Public Relations. I was hooked and immediately immersed myself in the field by joining the Public Relations Student Society of America. There I learned the basics such as writing press releases, creating media kits, and the importance of solid networking skills.

Extracurricular activities:  I am a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the Zeta Delta Chapter of the Lambda Pi Eta National Communication Honor Society, and consistently on the Dean’s List. I volunteer by tutoring and mentoring children and teens. My passion lies in dance and I am a member of the Rutgers Performing Dance Company.

My goals:  I can envision myself as a Public Relations professional working in the area of Consumer Marketing, which is where I currently hold experience, or Crisis Communication. I am also interested in pursuing Marketing, and my fall internship is in that field.

What I like about SC&I and Rutgers:  The leadership certificate program offered within SC&I allows me to gain invaluable knowledge about becoming a superior leader and affords me additional practical experience. Academically, this program examines leadership from a communicative perspective, integrating theory with practice. This is of great importance because community service, integrity, and commitment are all a part of my core leadership values.

Some thoughts I’d like to share with fellow students:  Please do not hesitate to e-mail me if I may be of  any help to you. My e-mail is kimsara@eden.rutgers.edu. Also, get involved!

Name:  Carolyn

SC&I major: Communication

Other majors and minors:  Women and Gender Studies

I expect to graduate:  May 2008

Why I chose my SC&I major:  I chose to major in Communication because I felt it would not limit me to one particular career field. In addition, it can provide a broad array of professional opportunities.

Extracurricular activities:   Receiving a college education is not just attending classes and getting good grades, but taking advantage of everything the University has to offer. Therefore I got involved by joining a variety of clubs on campus. I am on the Orientation Committee for New Student Orientation, the Secretary for Scarlet Key Society, a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and a former Leadership Director for the Emerging Leaders Institute.

My goals:  I plan to continue my education by pursuing a Master's in College Student Personnel, which would prepare me as a counselor or administrator of student affairs services in a higher education setting.

What I like about SC&I and Rutgers:  I love that Rutgers can be as small or as large as you want it to be. You can easily get lost and become just another number... or you can network, get involved and
join various organizations while making great friends and developing relationships with the academic staff.

Some thoughts I’d like to share with fellow students:  If I could give one piece of advice to students, it would be "Don't wait for the last minute."  It is surprising just how quickly those papers and exams will sneak up on you!
