Department of Journalism and Media Studies
Professor Susan Keith published an article entitled: "From Convergence to Webvergence: Tracking the Evolution of Broadcast-Print Partnerships through the Lens of Change Theory" in the Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, volume 86, number 2, pp. 257-276. The article, co-authored with Leslie-Jean Thornton of Arizona State University, was the lead article in the issue.
Department of Library and Information Science
Professor Nicholas J. Belkin was the recipient of the 2009 New Jersey Chapter of the American Society for Information Science and Technology Distinguished Lectureship Award. He presented his lecture entitled: "Personalizing Support for Interaction with Information" on September 25, 2009. The Award was established in 1985, and previous recipients have included the most distinguished researchers in information science, world-wide.
The articles published by Professor Marija Dalbello in the Library Quarterly, have been on the list of 20 most downloaded, and 20 most cited articles of this most respected scholarly publication in the field of library and information studies for at least a year, moving as high as the 5th place, and in the top ten place for an extended period in the category of most cited. Currently, two of her most recently published studies on the cultures of innovation in five national libraries are among 20 most accessed articles, and her two-part study: “A Phenomenological Study of an Emergent National Digital Library” among 20 most cited papers. Professor Carol Gordon published an article entitled: “Pondering a Peruvian Mystery, Part 1: The Historian’s Way of Knowing” in Synergy, volume 7, number 1. She also published an article entitled: “Raising Active Voices in School Libraries: Authentic Learning, Information Processing and Guided Inquiry” in Scan, volume 28, number 3.
Student Activities and Accomplishments
Ph.D. Program in Communication, Information and Library Studies
Ph.D. student Irene Lopatovska presented a paper entitled: “Does the Mood Matter” at the 2009 International Conference on Affective Computing & Intelligent Interaction on September 10-12, 2009, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Ph.D. student Richard Lee presented a paper entitled: “Bruce and New Jersey in the 21st Century” at the Glory Days symposium, Monmouth University on September 26, 2009, Monmouth, NJ. The paper explored how Bruce Springsteen has managed to retain his connection with New Jersey and its working class while becoming a multi-millionaire and international superstar.
Ph.D. student Paulette Kerr presented a paper entitled: “Espoused Theories and Theories-in-Use of Information Literacy: Reflecting for Effective Practice” at the International Association of School Librarianship Annual Conference and Research Forum on September 1-4, 2009, Padua, Italy.

Professor Marya Doerfel conducted a workshop for graduate students entitled: “Writing for an Academic Audience”. She also taught a Rutgers University Dollar Menu recreation course entitled: “Savvy Cycling On and Around Campus”.
Professor Jennifer Gibbs gave an invited lecture at Cornell University entitled: “Dialectics in Global Collaboration: Navigating Tensions across Time, Space, and Culture” on September 29, 2009.
Professor James E. Katz was a panelist at the "Ecologies in the Balance?: Thinking through the Crises" session, Rutgers University International Programs, New Brunswick, NJ on September 23, 2009.
Professor Katz also gave a talk entitled: “Perpetual Contact – How Cell Phones Are Changing Our World” to the Retired Faculty Association, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ on September 29, 2009.

Professor Marija Dalbello is co-organizer with Lorraine Piroux (French), and Tom Fulton (English) of the 2009-2010 Rutgers Seminar in the History of the Book, an interdisciplinary book seminar affiliated with the Center for Cultural Analysis.

Professor James E. Katz participated in a panel at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest on September 19, 2009. The subject of the workshop was "Ubiquitous Communication in an Intelligent World".
Professor Katz also gave a keynote talk entitled: “Ocular Predation and Other Dimensions of the Use of Mobile Media in Science Museums”, at the Museernes kommunikation i den digitale kultur konference, Roskilde Universitet, Roskilde, Denmark on September 22, 2009.
Professor Jenny Mandelbaum gave the keynote address at the Everyday Interaction Across Cultures conference at the University of Portsmouth, England on September 23, 2009. Her paper was entitled: "It's Disgusting’: Practices for Criticizing Food and Family at the Dinner Table".

Professor Marija Dalbello gave an invited talk at an international research symposium held at the National Taiwan University, Taipei on September 10-11, 2009. Her talk was titled: “Digital Cultural Heritage, A Decade in Review."
Professor Paul Kantor delivered a keynote address titled: "Library Performance Measurement: Impact, Quantity, Quality and Cost" reviewing 30 years of performance measurement at Information Science Research. An international symposium organized by the Department and Graduate Institute of Library and Information Science, National Taiwan University & National Taiwan University Library on September 10, 2009.
Professor Marie L. Radford presented a Webinar: “User-Centered Reference: Approaches to Getting User Perspectives for Infopeople, California on September 22, 2009.
