Description: As the foundation course for the ITI major, Information Technology and Informatics provides students with an overview of the key theoretical and professional themes across the entire ITI curriculum. Theoretical emphasis is placed on social informatics, human-computer interaction, management of information technology, the relationship between technology, race and gender, and information intelligence. Practical emphasis is placed on the effective and efficient use of information technologies including the World Wide Web in organizations, and the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills appropriate for the workplace. The student will:
- understand the relationship among society, people, organizations, and technology and identify the implications for managing and using information technology in the workplace;
- identify and critique the major interdisciplinary theories underpinning the provision of information technology, including technological determinism and social constructivist perspectives;
- use the web to efficiently quality information;
- identify issues related to information intelligence and ways to protect and/or exploit information assets;
- identify the role that management and economics play in the evaluation and implementation of information systems;
- apply critical thinking, problem solving and information literacy skills appropriate for the workplace.
