Bio
Bio Text:

Before coming to Rutgers, I worked as a research scientist at Yahoo! Research Berkeley, where I led a team of research engineers and interns investigating the future of multimedia. Even before that, I received my Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University, and a BA from Tel Aviv University.

My professional service includes serving as co-chair of the JCDL 2008 Program Committee, and co-chair of ACM Multimedia 2009's Grand Challenge. I am a recipient of two JCDL best paper awards (in 2004 and 2007).

In my previous careers, I was a professional basketball player as well as a software developer and a college radio DJ. In subsequent careers, I hope to be a professional backpacker and traveler.

Fields of Study: social media, mobile, multimedia, location-based information
Research Interests:

When does "Social Media" become information? How do mobile devices affect the way we create, consume and curate information? How important is location metadata for information creation, access, and organization?

More broadly, my technical domains of interest include multimedia information systems, mobile and ubiquitous computing, and location-based information. My research employs a human-centered research approach to develop data models, algorithms and new applications in these domains. Once developed, these tools allow the study of user behavior, user motivations and the characteristics of application use.
