Public Speaking Competition for SCILS Students, Presented by Lambda Pi Eta
Location: SCILS Student Lounge



SCILS sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible to enter a Public Speaking Contest sponsored by Lambda Pi Eta, the communication honor society. Win a prize of up to $350!

The Ann Bussing Speaking Award for Seniors ($350, $250, and $150)
The Irving Upson Speaking Award for Juniors ($350, $250, and $150)
The Myron Smith Speaking Award for Sophomores ($250, $150, and $100)

Speeches should be prepared in advance and be about three to five minutes in length. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • An ethical dilemma that relates to the field of communication (i.e., using the Internet to plagiarize) 
  • The role of communication in interpersonal relationships
  • The importance of communication in everyday life
  • The role of the media in voicing student concerns over changes at Rutgers

Contest entrants must be SCILS students. All entrants must submit a short abstract outlining their speech to Dr. Galina Bolden. Abstracts are due April 8. Please drop off abstracts in Dr. Bolden's mailbox in the Dean's Office, Room 314.

Please include your name, expected graduation date, and email address with your abstract. If you are selected, you will be notified by email with further details.

Those who are selected will present their prepared speech and will be judged by a panel on Monday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the SCILS Student Lounge. All are welcome to attend.
