Ruth Toor was the library media specialist at Southern Boulevard School in Chatham for 29 years, retiring from her day job in June, 2001. She continues writing and editing the SCHOOL LIBRARIAN’S WORKSHOP now going into its 27th year of publication, does consulting, and, having been an AASL president and member of ALA Council, still works actively on ALA, AASL and ALSC Committees including the ALA Committee on Legislation.She has co-authored 11 professional books and a 12th title, New on the Job: A School Library Media Specialist’s Guide to Success, again co-authored with Hilda Weisburg, will be published by ALA Editions this fall. Over the years she has taught graduate courses as an adjunct at Rutgers and Montclair State Universities, is currently the Internship Adviser for Professional Development Studies at SC&I, and has presented a week-long graduate “School Librarians’ Leadership Academy” in Alaska. She has spoken at many national and state conferences, presenting workshops in 22 states.
She is a member of the Advisory Committee for CISSL, the Center for International Scholarship in School Libraries, established at SC&I in 2003. A past president of the New Jersey Association of School Librarians, she was honored with its President’s Award as well as its Lifetime Membership Award. She earned her BA at the University of Delaware and was inducted into its Alumni Wall of Fame, and her MLS at Rutgers SC&I.
