John Berard brings nearly 30 years of communications expertise to his work at PR21, a New York-based public relations agency supporting technology, consumer products, professional services and healthcare/pharmaceutical companies. As a managing director, he sits on the firm's Operating Committee. John leads the agency's technology practice and its operations in San Francisco .
His focus on technology-savvy companies in any industry is built on a platform of corporate, market positioning and public affairs expertise honed in Washington, D.C., New York and San Francisco .
Prior to joining PR21, Berard was the San Francisco-based General Manager, West Coast Operations for FitzGerald Communications, a technology and biotechnology-focused public relations agency with its headquarters in Boston . While there he held primary responsibility for helping position properly the agency's clients; aligning their offer with the right target or vertical market and creating the message platform to trigger action. John seeks to help companies sharply define a market position and leadership program that can advance an industry even as it creates market share.
Earlier in his career, John was the general manager of the Fleishman-Hillard office in San Francisco (from 1996-to-1999) and deputy director of that firm's technology practice. In those posts, he counseled a wide range of public affairs, technology and corporate clients.
Before moving to San Francisco in 1996, he served as director of Hill & Knowlton/ New York 's technology team and a member of the office of the chairman. In that capacity he was the firm's spokesperson on matters related to its work on behalf of clients as well as the relationship manager for one of the firm's largest, global accounts..
He is a member of the boards of the San Francisco Food Bank (www.sffb.org) and founder of the San Francisco-based TRUSTe, the online privacy rights advocacy group (www.truste.org) (but has since rotated off), and the International Association of Privacy Officers, a group of corporate executives charged with setting privacy policies for their companies and customers (www.privacyassociation.org).
John's work in privacy allows him to bridge his 15 years (1977-1992) working in Washington, D.C. -- for public relations agencies Carl Byoir & Associates, Gray & Company and Hill & Knowlton -- to his focus on the issue as a current corporate priority. He began his career in 1974 as a public information officer for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority.
He is a graduate of Rutgers College in New Brunswick, New Jersey with a degree in Human Communication.
