Journalism and Media Studies Major
Selected Student Profiles

Name:  Nicole

SC&I major:  Journalism and Media Studies

Other majors and minors:  Theater Arts

I expect to graduate:  January 2008

Why I chose my SC&I major:  Steve Miller has been a great academic advisor me. As a freshman he helped me understand how a journalism major can only help facilitate my goals in entertainment. I learned quickly you can not have a one track mind, it's good to be determined, but it's important to keep your options open.

Extracurricular activities:  While attending Rutgers, I have worked as a production assistant for the MTV Music Awards and BET, and The 2006 and 2007 Tony Awards.  I have worked with the Tribecca Film Festival in NYC, and currently work in the script department as an intern at Saturday Night Live. I have also worked at RUTV where I have helped out in all capacities at the station as host, producer, editor, shooter and script writer.  I also attend Upright Citizens Brigade in NYC doing improv comedy.

My goals:  I love writing for TV and film, acting and broadcast news.  In the future I would love to find some way to collaborate all my interests into my professional career.  I have always wanted to act, and I was never interested in journalism until I started taking journalism courses at SC&I.

What I like about SC&I and Rutgers:  I'm orginally from Fort Wayne, Indiana. I came to Rutgers to pursue my education because it's in a great loaction for my fields of interest.  I have been at Rutgers since freshman year, but decided to graduate early.

Some thoughts I’d like to share with fellow students:  My best advice to any SC&I major would be--never turn down an opportunity, meet everyone you can, take advantage of the wonderful guest speakers that SC&I brings in, and network network network! In this biz, it's all about who you know, and I've experienced that first hand. I always work with the same people in New York it seems like, no matter what gig I'm working.  It's a suprisingly small industry! Right now I'm working on getting a professional broadcast reel to send to TV markets, audition for acting roles in New York, and send my writing pieces to print publications around the area.  It's great to cover your bases, and again keep all your options open.

Other majors and minors:  Criminal Justice (major); Sociology (minor)

I expect to graduate:  2008

Why I chose my SC&I major:  I have a genuine interest in all facets of Television News and Television Production. In high school I participated in my school’s television news programming and was truly excited and enthused about learning everything there was to know.

My goals:  I would love to work in Television doing something with Entertainment/Feature News.

What I like about SC&I and Rutgers:  The best part about SC&I and Rutgers in general is the opportunities that can come from Rutgers. Everyone at Rutgers is here to help us and if we really take advantage of the services provided our opportunities can really be endless. Not to mention football :)

Some thoughts I’d like to share with fellow students:  Work hard and really get to know everyone you meet, especially professors, because you never know if that person could be your connection to your dream job.
