Rutgers University, CIT Present Sixteenth
Annual New Jersey Journalism Awards

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. April 17, 2003— The Department
of Journalism and Media Studies of Rutgers University and
CIT, the Livingston, New Jersey-based commercial and consumer
finance company, presented the Sixteenth Annual Journalism
Awards for Distinguished Business & Financial Reporting
of New Jersey Issues on Thursday, April 10th, 2003. This year’s
competition was as intense as ever, and judges had a difficult
time deciding the winners among such a large number of deserving
entries. The awards, for articles published in 2002, went

This is the second consecutive year John Froonjian of The Press
of Atlantic City has received the “Best Article, Large
Daily” award. Last year he won for his piece, “Without
Transportation, Many Lives Go Nowhere” written with Eileen
Bennett. Additionally, this is the second year in a row NJBiz
has garnered the “Best Article, Small Daily” award.
Atlanticville and The Setonian are both first-time winners.
Other past winners have included The Newark Star-Ledger, The
Asbury Park Press, The Bridgeton Evening News, The Courier-News,
The Times of Trenton, The Westfield Record, and New Jersey Magazine.
A cash prize of $2,500 was awarded for Best Article in each
of the three professional categories, and a prize of $500
was awarded for Best Article in the College/University category
and professional Honorable Mention winners.
Marshall Loeb, from CBS Marketwatch Keynotes Ceremony
Marshall Loeb, a columnist on Marketwatch.com, and a commentator
on CBS radio and the television show “Marketing Weekend,”
addressed journalists, faculty and students gathered at The
Rutgers Club on Rutgers University's New Brunswick campus
for the awards ceremony. Loeb, is a personal finance pioneer,
who served as managing editor of two of the most successful
magazines in history: Fortune and Money. Cited by The New
York Times as “one of the most visible and influential
editors in the magazine industry,” Loeb provided guests
with humor and insight into the rapidly changing landscape
of the publishing and journalism industry.
Officiating the evening was Yvette Rudich, vice president,
director of corporate communications for CIT, and Dr. John
V. Pavlik, chair of the Department of Journalism and Media
Studies and Director of the Journalism Resources Institute
at The Rutgers University School of Communication, Information
and Library Studies.
Judges for the competition were Steve Ross,
associate professor of journalism, Columbia University and
Guy Baehr, Acting Director of the Journalism Resources Institute,
Rutgers University.
