November 2009

Dean Jorge Reina SchementDean Jorge Reina Schement of the School of Communication and Information has been named to the Top 100 Most Influential Hispanics in Information Technology by the Hispanic IT Executive Council (HITEC).

This year’s Top 100 were chosen from more than 4,000 information technology professionals, based on criteria including their individual achievements, professional level, scope of responsibility, and involvement in boards and diversity initiatives.

The HITEC list highlighted Dean Schement’s work for the Media Access Project, Verizon, and the Federal Communications Commission. Schement played a key role in the idea of the digital divide when it comes to access to broadband Internet service across socioeconomic status levels and ethnic groups.

“To be sure, I am honored to receive this recognition from HITEC,” said Dean Schement. “In addition to highlighting my work in the information and telecommunications policy field, more importantly, this list highlights the contributions of Hispanics in positions of leadership in the IT field. Their influence is growing, but we must maintain a commitment to real diversity.”
