Student Project Allows Anyone to See Rutgers Up Close and Personal
May 5, 2009
The undergraduate students in Assistant Professor Anselm Spoerri's "Information Visualization" course have opened up Rutgers' College Avenue Campus to the world through their "whereRU" project. Using a robotic camera that takes a series of images and stitches them into one huge multi-gigapixel photograph, the students have documented notable locations across the campus in New Brunswick, allowing viewers to zoom in and see Rutgers in minute detail. "They can see what the inside of the library, or gym, etc., looks like just by using our tour," student Elina Prokofyeva told the Daily Targum. "Our footage not only captures the campus, but Rutgers students going about their everyday routine, giving prospective students a chance to see what college life is like before actually experiencing it." Under Professor Spoerri's guidance, the students have used Gigapan and Photosynth, two cutting-edge imaging technologies used to create large detailed and three-dimensional panoramic images. The phenomenon caught recent attention via a highly detailed viral image from President Barack Obama's inauguration. Read more about the whereRU project in the Daily Targum.
