About National ASIS&T
New Jersey American Society for Information Science and Technology (NJ-ASIS&T) is a chapter of the national ASIS&T group. The American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) is a nonprofit professional association organized for scientific, literary and educational purposes and dedicated to the creation, organization, dissemination and application of knowledge concerning information and its transfer. Founded in the mid-1930s, ASIS&T has a history which stems from the earliest days of the modern era of documentation.¹
ASIS&T contributes to the advancement of information science through its publications, continuing education, career services, conferences and meetings and special interest groups.
• Publications. These include the Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, the Bulletin of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, and the ASIS&T Handbook and Directory. Various other monographs and edited collections are also available from ASIS&T.
• Continuing Education. Courses are held at the Annual and Mid-Year Meetings and in regional locations. These courses are designed for people with varying degrees of knowledge and target some of the most up-to-date topics and applications around.
• Career Services. This service is made up of ASIS&T Jobline, a monthly publication containing relevant jobs across the country and the ASIS&T Placement Service which operates at the ASIS&T Annual meeting.
• Conferences and Meetings. ASIS&T sponsors two of the most highly reported meetings in the field of information science. The Annual is held during the autumn, while the Mid-Year meeting is held during the late Spring. The current dates of the meetings can be found in the Events section of this web site. • Special Interest Groups. Special Interest Groups (SIGS) include automated language processing; computerized retrieval services; human-computer interaction; information analysis and evaluation; visualization, images and sound. This is an incomplete listing of the SIGS available through ASIS&T. A more detailed listing can be found in the SIG section of the ASIS&T web site.
