VANDERGRIFT'S INFORMATIONAL RESOURCES

RESEARCH FOCUS DRAWN FROM PICTORIAL STUDIES AND OTHER INFORMATIONAL RESOURCES

Linkages Page | Children's Literature Page

Although most of these resources are very general in nature, they offer young people opportunities to acquire an overview of a broad topic in ways that encourage divergent thinking. In the research process students can be encouraged to use such materials as a starting point to identify, select, and begin the process of focusing on a topic for investigation. A small picture on a page or a short piece of text may stimulate the imagination and the intellectual curiosity that initiates this process.

For instance, the Eyewitness Book, Arms & Armor by Michele Byam, is a photo essay of weapons and armor from all over the world and spanning time from the stone age through the wild west. A student interested in this broad topic could, in browsing through this visually enticing work, select a photographic segment as a starting point for further study. Using both the index and the table of contents, one would see connections that are not at first apparent. A student who was considering a focus on pistols could turn to the table of contents and find headings for chapters entitled "Capital Pistols," "Dueling Pistols," "The Percussion Revolver," and "Keeping Law and Order," all of which might contain useful information. The index would then lead to additional information on the topic. Using the chapter on "Pistols," a student might become fascinated with the small palm pistol or lemon squeezer (page 58) used to assassinate William McKinley and, in the process, move from a focus on pistols to weapons of assassination. It would then be logical to look at the assassinations of Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King, Jr., which would, in the case of Kennedy, move beyond pistols to other weapons. Examining the chapter on "Keeping Law and Order" might lead a student to a very different focus on police through the ages or, even more specifically, on police in comic images or caricatures. An alternative path a student might select from examining these pages is an investigation of types of handcuffs.

Using this technique, students will recognize the wide range of foci that may be found under a broad or very general topic. What makes Eyewitness Books so elegant an approach in communicating this to students is the variety of topics included in this series as well as the balance of color illustrations and short texts that often address unusual or strange aspects of these topics. As a result of such a lesson, students should begin to see how a specific topic is ferreted out of a more general one. They will also recognize the importance of, as well as the similarities and differences between, the index and the table of contents in a single book. In this way students should be helped to select a specific topic of interest, one worth all the invested time to complete a full-scale presentation and, at the same time, take pleasure in the process.

A new series entitled "W5" is a visually interesting although somewhat tongue-in-cheek approach to answering who, what, where, when, and why questions within a specific time frame and context. An excellent approach that is somewhat non-linear in style. Another new series The Great Naturalists will explore the lives of twentieth-century naturalists with Evelyn Gallardo's Among the Orangutans as a powerful beginning..
