VANDERGRIFT'S 100: LIST OF YOUNG ADULT AUTHORS AND TITLES

Young Adult Page

This list, which changes each year to include new authors, is a very small portion of the wealth of literature published for young adults. Some books of historical significance stay on the list while some new titles are added. Many of the titles are in paperback, and almost all will be in public libraries. This list is intended to provide guidance for those unfamiliar with literature for young adults, but it is certainly not exhaustive. Read as many of these books as possible but, in addition, read new books by favorite authors and additional titles recommended by colleagues or young people. Such works as Alice Walker's The Color Purple,The Diary of Anne Frank, Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye, and Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings are often included in the high school curriculum and, therefore, should be familiar to those planning to work with this age group. Part of your task is to identify and read additional titles popular with young people in your area.
