Notes: Information on Harriet Hemenway and the Audubon Society

History Unwrapped: Dramatic Portrayals from History. The Turn of the 20th Century is illuminated by Proper Bostonian Harriet L. Hemenway 's conservation crusade which created the National Audubon Society. Belinda West is the actress in this performance she makes available to schools.

National Auduban Society. The National Audubon Society's mission to conserve birds and their habitats is deeply rooted in our origin, when nearly a century ago, concerned citizens organized against the slaughter of herons and egrets whose feathers were being used to adorn ladies' hats. Those citizens, calling themselves the Audubon Societies, successfully fostered laws to protect those birds and their rookeries.

The Massachusetts Audubon Society. This is the largest conservation organization in New England. Concentrating its efforts in Massachusetts, the Society has protected more than 27,000 acres of conservation land/wildlife habitat, conducts nature
education programs for 200,000 children annually, and advocates for sound environmental policies.

John James Audubon. He spent days and weeks in the woods studying birds and animals; and his spectacular drawings, which were criticized by some, were scenes he actually witnessed.
