Deborah Hopkinson's first picture book, SWEET CLARA AND THE
FREEDOM QUILT, won the 1994 International Reading Association
Award and was a Reading Rainbow selection. BIRDIE's LIGHTHOUSE,
illustrated by Kimberly Bulcken Root, was a Junior Library Guild
Selection, Parents Choice Silver Honor book, and a Blue Ribbon
selection of the Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books.
In 1999 she will have two books published, A BAND OF ANGELS,
also a Junior Library Guild selection, and MARIA's COMET, based
on the life of astronomer Maria Mitchell. She works in higher
education fundraising for Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington.
