Understanding
the work of David Wisniewski is helped by knowing something of his work
with the Clarion Shadow Theatre that he founded with his wife Donna. His
books are an alternative expression of his use of these art forms.
Clarion
Shadow Theatre has performed for thousands of children and adults in the
Washington, DC region, appearing at the Smithsonian Institution's Discovery
Theater program and Kennedy Center's Programs for Children and Youth.
The troupe has garnered two grants from the prestigious Henson Foundation
(founded by the late Jim Henson, founder of The Muppets, to "foster excellence
in the field of American puppetry") and a Citation of Excellence from
UNIMA (Union Internationale de Marionette).
The Wisniewskis
have also conducted many in-services and workshops in their unique form
of shadow puppetry, working extensively with the World Trap Institute
for Early Learning Through the Arts over a ten-year period.

Shadow
puppetry sounds rather exotic. Actually, it is, but only when you consider
its ancient Chinese and Indian origins, its mystical ties to Eastern religions,
and its present use in faraway lands such as Indochina and Turkey. When
modified and modernized, shadow puppetry becomes not only enormously practical
but also the most vivid and flexible of puppet forms, not to mention the
simplest and least expensive.
