The girl is not ready to "face" us yet.

Pictures

In these pictures, we don't see all of Marianthe. This may be Aliki's way of showing us that we readers, as well as her classmates, have yet to discover all there is to know about her.

Text

These are things Marianthe says to her mother:
  • "They won't understand me"
  • "Everything here is so different"
  • "I am a little afraid, but not enough to cry"
These words from the text let us know how Marianthe is feeling. She is hesitant, reluctant, concerned and unsure of how she will do in her new school. The last phrase gives us a glimpse into another part of Marianthe, however. The last phrase lets us see that underneath the fears is a layer of strength, like the hard pit of a peach.
