Notice how in this picture we are drawn to look at what Mari is observing. She is focused on the rude behavior of the red-haired boy. There is an imaginary line between Mari's eyes and his. Note the gentle curvature of Mari's eyebrows and hair in contrast to the straight lines of the boy's eyebrows and hair.
