National policy for e-science |
The National Research Council is creating a new board on Research Data and Information. The intent of this board is to supervise studies about the use of scientific data. Topics will include public access to the literature, access to research data, what kind of education is needed to produce people to manage scientific data, preservation, legal principles, and international issues. |

Considering Cognitive Load on Web Search Tasks |
Assessing cognitive load on web search is useful in examining which search system features, search tasks types and phases are more cognitively difficult for the searchers. It is also helpful in examining how individual differences among searchers (e.g. cognitive abilities) affect the search process. This investigation examined cognitive load from the perspective of primary and secondary task performance. A controlled web search study was conducted with 48 participants. The primary task performance components were found to be significantly related to both the objective and the subjective task difficulty. However, the relationship between objective and subjective task difficulty and the secondary task performance measures was weaker than expected. more... |

Event and Map Content Personalisation in a Mobile and Context-Aware Environment |
"The amount of available information is constantly increasing and the need for effective methods of information access is higher than ever; this is even more important for users of handheld devices. Personalisation is one of these methods that models individuals' properties so that content can be delivered more targeted to personal needs. Inspired by the increasing popularity of mobile devices, personalised systems have started to include aspects of the person's contextual environment. This work contributes with an evaluation into the effectiveness of context for personalised information delivery in mobile environments. It is focused on entertainment events and geographic maps as two relevant types of mobile content. The research consists of three parts:
The first part of this research reports on a detailed user experiment on context where three promising contextual attributes are investigated (time, location and interest) based on how they affected users' perception of usefulness. This experiment was based on results and experiences from earlier user studies undertaken in the AmbieSense EU-IST project that provided insights about travellers and tourists as one class of mobile users. In the second part, these results were applied to create a predictive model of context that was brought into relation with attribution theory and then combined with an information retrieval score to create a weighted personalisation model. In the third part of this study, the personalisation model was applied in a mobile experiment where participants solved situational search tasks using a non-personalized and a personalized mobile information system and rating entertainment events based on usefulness. Results showed that the personalised system delivered about 20% more useful content to the mobile user than the non-personalised system with some indication for reduced search effort in terms of time and the amount of queries per task.
The work presented provides evidence for the promising potential of context to facilitate personalised information delivery for mobile users. Overall, it serves as an example of an investigation into the effectiveness of context from multiple angles and provides a potential link to some of the aspects of psychology as a potential source for a deeper understanding of contextual processes in humans." |
