The Immense data collections now being built in many fields are changing the way science happens, which may improve the public's understanding of research and encourage more young people to pursue careers in science, according to Michael Lesk, professor of library and information science and award-winning teacher. Early in his career, Lesk worked on the development of UNIX, the ground-breaking computer code that helped launch the digital age, which is one of the reasons he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering.
Vikki Katz - "Children being seen & heard: How youth contribute to their immigrant families' adaptation" (7:27)
More and more children in America today are growing up in immigrant families and they play critical roles in helping their parents adapt to this country, so it's critical to understand the effects on those kids, Vikki Katz says. An assistant professor of communication, she recently published a book on this subject, Children Being Seen and Heard (Editorial Aresta, 2011), and she co-authored a 2010 book on media targeted to immigrant, ethnic minority and indigenous audiences.
