1840

First Federal census in Wisconsin

Wisconsin's first Federal census was taken in this year. Population figures for the territory from earlier years, as recorded by the census of 1820 and 1830, had been included in the census of Michigan. The population of the city of Madison in 1840 was 146. The original schedules for Wisconsin territorial and state censuses, with few exceptions, are available in the State Archives at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin.
