Madison receives city charter

In this year, Madison became a city and Jairus Fairchild won the first mayoral contest. The city Police Court divided the city into four wards based on the four major avenues of the city. These wards composed the new school districts of the city and the education system was controlled by an elected school board and superintendent of schools.
