1863

Construction of second Capitol Building

Although newspapers of the time report that “a large number of dwellings and business blocks and several fine residences” (Gilmore, p. 30) were erected in this year, it also marks the year that workers began to tear down the first Capitol. Though the work on the building was called an “enlargement” by the legislature, it was in reality a complete overhaul, and it would continue until 1870.
