1878 Destructive storms in three counties Dane, Jefferson, and Iowa Counties were visited by a destructive storm system. In "The Wisconsin Tornadoes of May 23, 1878," University of Wisconsin professor W. W. Daniells recounts the storms in minute detail. Three separate tornadoes touched down on that date causing much damage to farm buildings, land and livestock. Professor Daniells records two deaths in Dane county. Many physical injuries, both serious and minor, were also caused by the storms. Loss of property totaled: Iowa County, $63,990; Dane County, $43,455; Jefferson County; $23,535.
