Second Capitol destroyed by fire

Fire destroyed the second Madison Capitol on February 27, 1904. The fire, possibly caused by a gas lamp in the South Wing cloak room, consumed eighty percent of the building.

The 1905 Legislature chose the New York firm George B. Post and Sons to design a new building. The third and present Capitol was completed in 1917.
