Although the first machine was used to cancel mail in 1871, the technology did not become widely available until the 1890s. By 1896, machines were being used to cancel the postage on mail in Wisconsin's larger cities. Machine cancellation from Madison, WI, 1898. The number "1" refers to the die used in the machine.
