Grandfather Seven and Grandfather Eight

Grandfatehr Seven (Qi Ye) and Grandfather Eight ( Be Ye ) are two popular symbols of the Festival. In the spirit world, they are the partolmen who report misconduct to the heavenly powers.
Grandfather Eight, depicted as a short, stout, black figure with rolling eyes, is just the opposite of Grandfather Seven, who is tall and thin with a long , lolling red tongue. Legend has it that during their mortal life tehy were devoted to friends. One day they had a meeting, but the Grandfather Eight was caught by the rainstrom and drowned in a nearby river. When Grandfather Seven found him, he was overcome with his grief and he hung himself ( maybe this is why he had a long red tongue). As a reward for their loyalty to friends, they were granted the position of guardsmen, and very large, puppetlike representations of them can be seen parading through their local areas.
