The Czech Republic is located in Central Europe, sharing borders with Austria, Germany, Poland, and the Slovak Republic.  The country has a rich history, with periods of independance between prolonged era's of domination by the Austian Empire, and more recently nazi Germany, and the Communist Soviet Union.  Currently, the Czech republic is an independant nation with a parliamentary democracy.  It is the parliament that elects the president to a five year term.

The country consists of seven regions:  Noth, South, East, West, and Central Bohemia, and North and South Moravia.  The Sumova, Cesky les, and Krusne hory mountain ranges encircle Bohemia, forming natural fronitiers, while the Bile Karpaty, Javorniky, and Sudetens surround the Moravias.

The Czech Republic is also known for it's alcohol.  Beer brewing in the Czecch Republic dates back to 1082, Karlovy Vary is known for Becherovka, an herb liquor known as the  "13th Spring", and the Moravian vinyards produce very good wines.

There are many famous people that you may or may not recognise as being Czech.  The writer Franz Kafka, composer Antonin Dvorak, and Art Nouveau artist Alfonse Mucha were all Czech.  More recent figures include film director Milos Forman, and numerous athletes including hockey players Jaromir Jagr and Dominic Hasek, and tennis players Martina Navratilova and Ivan Lendl.
