Cesky Krumlov is located on two bends
of the Vltava river in South Bohemia, approximately 14 miles from the Austrian
border. In 1992 UNESCO declared Cesky Krumlov to be "second in importance
only to Venice on the World Heritage List."
The Cesky Krumlov Castle was
built prior to 1250, and with inhabitants such as the Rozemberks and Schwarzenbergs,
it evolved into a complex of 40 buildings and 5 courtyards over the next
six centuries. There are a remarkable 250 buildings constructed between
the middle ages and seventeenth century.
Don't miss tours of the Castle,
the regional museum, the Gothic / Baroque interior of the St. Vitus Church,
or the Eggenberg Brewery. Although the brewery does not provide tours,
there is a pub where you might meet some of the locals. Also worth
visiting is the Egon Schiele Cultural Center. The Austrian artist's
mother was from Cesky Krumlov, and he lived here for a while in 1911.
His studios have been adapted into an exhibition space that currently shows
80 of his works.
