Prague is not only the largest
and most populous city in the Czech Republic, it is also the capital.
According to legend, chieftain Krok built a castle in what is now Vysehrad
(High Castle) because his wise daughter Libuse prophesied that a great
city would emerge there. She married a ploughman named Premysl, started
the Premysl dynesty, and the rest is history.
Prague Castle dates back to
the 9th century, and is the current seat of the Czech government.
Prague is known for diverse architecture, as evidenced by the part gothic,
part renaissance, and part baroque St. Vitus Cathedral, the gothic exterior
and baroque interior of the Tyn Church, the Art Nouveau Grand Hotel Europa,
several cubist buildings, and the modern "Fred & Ginger".
Transportation will be no problem,
due to Prague's three underground metro lines, numerous tram, and bus lines,
but the best way to see prague is to walk from site to site. While
in Prague you can see an opera in the Estates Theater, where Mozart himself
conducted the premiere of Don Giovanni, visit Franz Kafka's apartment on
the Golden Lane in the castle district, or stroll through the parks on
Petrin Hill.
