Moving Image Collection (MIC) --
Union Catalog Metadata Survey

Progress:

The Union Catalog of Moving Image Collections (MIC) provides access to uniform bibliographic records for the collections of participating moving image archives all over the world. It is a "who has what" database.
Each record for a moving image contains a number of fields, to depict different aspects of a moving image, such as title, duration, physical characteristics, organization etc.

You are provided examples of different tasks-at-hand or scenarios, describing activities that require moving images. They represent specific information needs. Make your assessment with consideration of such scenarios.
We are interested in finding out how different metadata fields contribute to following four processes in the cycle of satisfying an information need (represented by given scenarios):

  • FIND (section 1) moving images for given scenario(s). How useful are various fields displayed in searching for a moving images that correspond to given scenario(s)?
  • From the set of records retrieved, IDENTIFY (section 2) potentially relevant moving images for given scenarios. How useful are various fields displayed in identifying moving images that are potentially relevant?
  • From the ones that you identified, SELECT (section 3) those that you would like to obtain. How useful are various fields displayed in your decision to select records that you would actually like to get?
  • OBTAIN (section 4) the selected moving images from an organization. How useful are various fields displayed in your efforts to get the selected moving images in whatever mode may be available or desirable (e.g. a streaming video that can be immediately viewed, a physical copy that can be borrowed, purchased, or rented)

The fifth section contains a few demographic questions to help us insure that we reach all of our targeted users (e.g., teachers, moving image archivists, etc.).

The survey will take about 20 to 30 minutes. Your ratings will be used to help the MIC developers design and implement improved searching and display for the MIC Union Catalog.

Sample scenarios:

(2) You are looking for a moving image on earthquakes with footage of the recent earthquake in Iran. You may choose to limit your search by date of production and/or by country of production.

(3) You are looking for a documentary on volcanoes and not a fictional feature film with volcanoes.

(4) You are looking for moving images on sexually-transmitted diseases appropriate for a middle school audience.
