Required textbook
- June Parsons, Dan Oja: New Perspectives on Computer Concepts,
6th Edition - Comprehensive, Course Technology, 2003, ISBN: 0619100052.
Recommended texts
- Preston Gralla: How the Internet Works, (6th edition). QUE, 2002.
It covers many of the course topics and the level of technical detail is appropriate
for this course. It balances textual explanations with illustrations, so it
is easy to read and understand.
- Douglas E. Comer: The Internet book (3rd edition). Prentice Hall,
2000.
An image is worth one thousand words. However, if you don't find the illustrations
of the required textbook sufficiently intuitive, this is a complementary book
that uses mainly words to explain technology.
- Frank J. Derfler, Jr. and Les Freed: How networks work (Millenium
edition). QUE, 2000.
It has been used in the past for this course, but I find it too basic to be
worth its price.
- Ron White: How computers work (6th edition). QUE, 2002.
It has some overlap with the topics of this course, but it concentrate on
the desktop PC, its internal structure and functionality, its input/output
devices, and popular applications. It is not required for this course, but
it complements the course, in case you want to enhance your understanding
of technology.
- Ed Bott and Woody Leonhard: Using Microsoft Office XP (Special
Edition). QUE, 2001.
If you prefer learning from books rather than from (free) online tutorials,
this book is quite good: it covers all Office tools, it has 5 stars in Amazon
(so people like it) and is on offer at 30% off.
- Chuck Musciano, Bill Kennedy: HTML & XHTML: The Definitive Guide
(5th Edition), O'Reilly, 2002.
- Elizabeth Castro: HTML for the World Wide Web with XHTML and CSS: Visual
QuickStart Guide, Fifth Edition. Peachpit Press, 2002, ISBN: 0321130073.
- Elizabeth Castro: XML for the World Wide Web: Visual QuickStart Guide.
Peachpit Press, 2000, ISBN: 0201710986.
- Danny Goodman: Dynamic HTML: The Definitive Reference - A Comprehensive
Resource for HTML, CSS, DOM & JavaScript, 2nd Edition, O'Reilly,
2002.
- Todd Marks, Imar Spaanjaars and Charles Brown: Beginning Dreamweaver
MX, Wrox, 2003.
Dreamweaver is the software tool used in class for building webpages. If you
choose to build a website as your project, a Dreamweaver manual may be very
useful.
Extra readings

of Computing. Copernicus, 1997.
- Peter J. Denning: Talking Back to the Machine - Computers and Human Aspiration.
Copernicus, 1999.
