NJLA Statement February 2003
by Dan O'Connor
Candidate for the Position of Member-at-Large, Executive Board, New Jersey Library Association
"In good times and in bad times, there has not been an appreciable increase in State support for libraries. I pledge to make this an area of concern. I regularly testify before the NJ Legislature on faculty matters and it is my hope that we can exert pressure on our elected leaders to give more support for our libraries. State support brings with it the creative folding together of library interests across public, school, and academic libraries as we draw on similar digital resources to serve our constituent patrons. I pledge to give a hearing to new ways to serve our library users and to explore new ways we may need to configure our field to serve better our library users. Strong leadership will exert pressure on NJLA members to fight for libraries and we need that pressure to increase support of libraries at every local level: in the community, in schools, and in academe. I pledge to help our members become the strong leaders our field will need to be effective advocates of 21st century librarianship. Input and resource standards must be revisited if libraries are to accomplish their missions and I pledge to renew our field's commitment to insuring that all of our New Jersey libraries are adequately funded. Lastly, I am deeply committed to Mitch Freedman's pay equity agenda and I pledge to fight for librarians and all library staff to earn a salary commensurate with their education and experience. New Jersey librarians deserve no less than having strong and independent leadership in its professional association and I pledge to tackle the hard issues that will help our field advance in its quest to give our citizens the best possible libraries to help them participate more effectively in our democracy and expand our economy."
