It's never too early to start preparing for your career in school librarianship, or too late to kick it up a notch. Join the professional organizations that will expand your network of school library contacts, and read the journals that will keep you in the know. To get started, check out these groups and publications:

Professional organizations

New Jersey Association of School Librarians : RASL's parent organization, NJASL offers a student membership for only $25 a year.

American Association of School Librarians (AASL): The division of the American Library Association (ALA) that has served school librarians for more than 50 years. Student memberships ($15) are available when you select the AASL division on your student membership application for the ALA ($25).

Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC): The division of the ALA composed of more than 3,700 youth librarians, children’s literature experts, and publishers committed to improving librarianship to children. Student memberships ($18) are available when you select the ALSC division on your student membership application for the ALA ($25).

Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA): The division of the ALA that advocates, promotes and strengthens service to young adults. Student memberships ($15) are available when you select the YALSA division on your student membership application for the ALA ($25).

Journals

School Library Journal: Founded in 1954, carries more book reviews and wins more awards for editorial excellence than any other publication in the field. Student subscriptions available for $62 a year, $52 for 26 weeks, or $26 for 13 weeks. To subscribe, fax a copy of your student ID, mailing information, subscription length, and payment information to SLJ's Anthony Rogers at 818-487-4550. Or call a customer service representative at 800-595-1066.

Teacher Librarian: Explores current issues in school librarianship, such as collaboration, leadership, technology, advocacy, information literacy, and management. $35 a year for students. To subscribe, complete the student offer form and mail it with your payment to Teacher Librarian, Box 34069, Dept. 343, Seattle, WA 98124-1069.

School Librarian's Workshop: Published six times a year by Ruth Toor and Hilda Weisburg, NJ library media specialists with more than 60 years of combined experience. Student subscriptions available for $39.95 a year. To subscribe,send a check and a copy of your student ID to: School Librarian's Workshop, Library Learning Resources Inc., P.O. Box 87, Berkeley Heights, N.J. 07922.
