International Education Resources

Before deciding to become a librarian, I worked in international education for eight years. In my old career I spent a lot of time gathering information about the educational systems of different countries, and I am now interested in developing ways to make this material useful to those who continue to work in the field. This page is a place to keep my work.

My current projects are both related to foreign credential evaluation:

Index to the World's Grading Scales

My plan is to develop a web-based index to the grading scales used by academic institutions around the world. The first version, now available, is just a hierarchical directory which allows you to find individual scales by following a path from larger to smaller categories (you proceed from country to educational level (e.g., secondary, tertiary) to institution and/or credential to the scale).

This structure has its merits, but it also has many disadvantages which will become clearer as the index grows in size. A better design for the index will organize the scales as database records that can be retrieved through a search engine, although users will still have the option to browse through hierarchical directories. I am working on the new design while making the first one available now.

ADSEC International Admissions Bibliography

A project for the Admissions Section of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, the bibliography will serve as a tool for credential evaluators based in colleges, universities, and other organizations that deal with international students and scholars. The final version, scheduled for completion in August 1999, will include about 300 records in both print and electronic media.

Now if you'll excuse me, I must get back to work....

Cheers!!
