Activities of the NJLA Gay and Lesbian Round Table
- Presented "Becoming Visible: Lesbian and Gay Youth in the
Library," by Kathy Anderson and a PFLAG member, a program on
service and collection development issues
with young adults, at New Jersey Educational Media
Association conference
- The Round Table produces a special issue of New Jersey
Libraries (Winter, 1997) devoted to such gay and lesbian issues
as gay youth in the library and lesbian and gay literature.
- Presented the New Jersey Lesbian and Gay Archive program, "Putting the
Gay and Lesbian Experience Back in the Closet for Posterity," by
Tom Frusciano, Rutgers Archivist , at NJLA Conference.
- Presented "It's My Life: Lesbian and Gay Issues," by
Kathy Anderson and Joe Fanning at New Jersey
Educational Media Association Conference
- Designed and printed 500 brochures about the roundtable.
Distributed them at the
NJLA conference as well as to groups
throughout the state.
- Worked with Rutgers
Archives and Special Collections to maintain
the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Archives of New Jersey.
- Sponsored Karen Schneider's "Is it Censorship?," which
examines the issue of
Internet filters , at the Spring NJLA conference.
- Established, this, our own home page. It
has links to other gay & lesbian sites such as ALA's SSRT, the Gay &
Lesbian Task Force, NJLA, and the Gayellow
Pages. Other information
includes the Round Table's history, goals, projects, and events.
- Designed and printed brochures about the NJ Gay & Lesbian
Archives. Distributed them to organizations throughout the state to
encourage them to preserve materials.
- Sponsored Leslea Newman as a
keynote speaker at the New Jersey
Library Association Spring Conference. Leslea Newman's topic was
"Heather's Mommy Speaks Out: Homophobia, Censorship and Family
Values."
- Sponsored a panel discussion entitled "Changing Families - Changing
Needs" at the fall EMA conference. Speakers were Carol Barfield
from the Burlington County Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
Coalition, Deborah Smith from NJEA's GLB Caucus, and Pat Morrow from
the Atlantic County Library.
- Pat Morrow gave a book talk entitled
"Leave it to Beaver" at the
EMA conference. Pat's
updated bibliography from that is available.
