Networking Software

Programs and Utilities

Network Client Software
Each client operating system has built in software to allow users to access the network. Windows has the Network Neighborhood in Windows 95/98/ME and MacOS has the Network Browser. Both of these built in utilities allow the user to view resources that have been shared over the network.

Web Browsers
Web Browsers are another kind of network software program. They are designed to allow users to view web pages and other documents supplied by web servers either locally (on an intranet) or through the Internet. The two most commonly used browsers are Internet Explorer and Netscape Communicator. Other browsers exist, some free, some shareware, and some commercial products but none are widely used. There are also some specialized browsers for children that do web content filtering.
