Course Description
Reviews state-of the art online information systems, emphasizing applications
to reference services;provides opportunities for applied search strategies;
develops skills in user needs analysis, search strategy formulation, database
knowledge, search implementation, and evaluation. Explores systems including
DIALOG, LEXIS/NEXIS, FIRST SEARCH, DR-LINK, WILSONLINE, PROQUEST, DOWJONES,
OVID, and others.
Course Objectives
Upon the completion
of the course students will:

be able to apply
interview techniques in search strategy development and online problem
solving.

have basic knowledge
of database structures.

gain knowledge
of database searching methods and procedures which optimize quality results.

be able to compare
commercial database systems, Internet search engines, and other information
resources.

become familiar
with major database vendors and their differences in access, coverage,
and usage.

have advanced
skills for developing and reformulating search strategies to different
database systems.

be able to evaluate
online information systems.
