Alyvia Walters is a Ph.D. candidate in Media Studies who researches the relationship between news and policy with a particular focus on how narratives and images of children are used as emotional appeals in politics. Through largely qualitative and critical cultural methods, she interrogates how race, gender, and class affect the deployment of our ideas about young people in spaces of politics and nation-building. Before coming to Rutgers, she earned her undergraduate degrees at Penn State University and her master’s degree at Georgetown University, where she taught writing courses and worked in the university’s Center for Multicultural Equity and Access. Before returning to graduate school, she was a high school English teacher. In her free time, Walters takes long walks around her neighborhood in Philly, attempts to garden (and sometimes succeeds!), and reads for fun at her local park.
