Program Assessment

Systematic planning and program learning assessment are an integral part of our program’s operation. The following information is the result of systematic information gathering and ongoing decision making based on such data:

  • ALA Accreditation: In 2019 Rutgers MLIS (currently MI) program was granted accreditation by the American Library Association. The program presentation was submitted in August 2018. The next accreditation is scheduled for 2025.
  • The program also submits a Biennial report, outlining program developments. The most recent was submitted in February, 2017.
  • Internally, within the School of Communication & Information an Annual Report on assessment of all programs is created. The Master of Information program report is part of this school wide study. This information is submitted to the university Academic Council on Learning Outcomes who provide feedback on the report.
  • Specific program data is collected and reported regularly regarding enrollments, and attrition.

Retention Rate: The average 2018 term over term (ToT) persistence rate (adjusted for Summer term) for the MI program:

The ToT persistent rate is defined as the percent of active students (minus graduates) from the previous term who returned for the current term.  Because Summer is not a required term in the MI program, but still an intake, the Fall ToT rate is calculated using Spring actual students (minus Spring and Summer graduates, plus Summer starts) who returned for the Fall term.  Saying that, the average ToT for MI in 2018 is 94%.  This rate is trending upward over the past few years, and in 2017 was 92% and in 2016 was 91%. Spring ‘19 ToT rate of 94% is consistent with average achieved in 2018.

The average time to degree completion for MI students is 2.25 years.

The percentage of graduates holding positions relevant to the degree within 12 months of degree completion for the MLIS program is represented in the following reports: 2017, 2016, 2015. The scope of the employment market has shifted since the advent of the Master of information degree 2018. Data is currently being gathered for analysis.
