Gender and Media Requirements

Understand Degree Requirements for a Gender and Media Minor

The Gender and Media minor complements all majors at Rutgers University. Students are required to complete 18 credits in the minor; this includes completing six 3-credit courses with a grade of C or better. The Gender and Media minor requires the completion of:

  • One foundational course
  • Two practice/production courses
  • Two conceptual courses
  • One capstone course 

Students wishing to pursue the Gender and Media minor are encouraged to make an appointment with School of Communication and Information (SC&I) Office of Student Services or with Gender and Media Program Director Mary Chayko, to make a plan for completing the program on schedule.

Students must take the following:

Foundation Course (3 credits, 1 course)

Choose one of the following for the foundational course:

Practice/Production Courses (6 credits, 2 courses)

Take the following class:

Choose one of the following for a second practice/production course:

Conceptual Courses (6 credits, 2 courses)

*Note: Only 3 of 6 credits in this category may be taken at the 200-level

Choose one of the following classes as a first conceptual course:

Capstone Course (3 credits, 1 course)

Take the following class:

Courses taken for the Gender and Media minor can also count for credit toward other majors or minors at SC&I or in the Department of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) at Rutgers. That is, they can double-count for a major and the Gender and Media minor.
