Members of SC&I’s faculty and doctoral students attended the 2023 Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from October 2-5. ALISE '23 is the premier annual gathering of library and information science (LIS) professionals. This year’s theme, “Bridge the Gap: Teaching, Learning, Practice, and Competencies,” explores the linkage between the professional and educational practice of LIS programs or iSchool curricula.
After getting my B.A., I took a bit of a circuitous route to full-time teaching. I started in Rhode Island (my home state), then moved to New Jersey. I’ve been at my current middle school since the late 1990s. I was a classroom teacher until January 2022, when I was finally able to make the transition to the school library.

Emma Moore MLIS’12 is Librarian for Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. SC&I was proud to see her appear on the popular game show Jeopardy! and took the opportunity to check in with Moore.
“When I consider what advice to share with young professionals, my top suggestion is to become a job-posting nerd, and not just for librarians, but also for the occupations surrounding it. You’ll get a feel for new (and profitable) skills needed for the industry.”
A fateful search on Indeed led Kaley to apply for a youth services position at Collingswood Public Library. They recalled, “I was convinced there was a literal lightbulb turning on above my head as I realized that library work is the perfect nexus of education, literature, and community service. Soon after, I enrolled in SC&I’s Master of Information program with a concentration in School Librarianship.”
