With this year’s conference theme, “Breaking Barriers, Simple Kindness,” NJLA invites attendees to reflect on the powerful role libraries play in promoting equity, compassion, and access for all. The theme resonates strongly with SC&I’s commitment to inclusive education, community engagement, and preparing library professionals who serve diverse populations.

SC&I Professor Kathryn Greene co-led a workshop on health communication CBPR, which was offered twice during the three-day event. Associate Professor Matthew Matsaganis and Associate Professor Lisa Mikesell presented collaborative based on community partnerships in New Jersey and Greece. Asssociate Professor Maria Venetis contributed with a poster session and served as a reviewer.

SC&I awarded a select number of school faculty and staff for their achievements during the 2024-2025 academic year.

The 1972 Rutgers alumnus addressed graduates during the 259th anniversary commencement of Rutgers University-New Brunswick and Rutgers Health.

Civadelic, who aspires to work as the editor-in-chief of a magazine, said because of the people she met and experiences she had as a SC&I student, she “feels prepared to be a journalist and lead the rest of my life giving back to young, aspiring professionals.”

“Becoming a clear and direct writer was among the most important lessons I learned at Rutgers,” Gaffen said.

“The world needs creative, committed, and responsible journalists and media makers more urgently than ever, and these students are leading the way,” said Chair of the Journalism and Media Studies Department and Professor Lauren Feldman.

“The award is given annually to honor a community partner organization that supports the school’s public health practice experiences,” said SPH.

A cap and gown that belonged to Bill Bauer—a beloved Rutgers professor and generous supporter of the university—will be worn at commencement ceremonies this year by Jon Oliver, a former student of Bauer and longtime Rutgers faculty and staff member who is completing his Ph.D. exactly 40 years after earning his bachelor’s degree.

During her visit to the MCM class, Carissa Lawson provided insights into how the rise of citizen journalism, social media, and AI are impacting news writing and broadcasting.

The highly prestigious Pulitzer Prize, one of the top literary prizes in the United States, is “designed to celebrate excellence in journalism, arts, and letters.”

“My RU pride has continued to grow as an alumna, as I have experienced the value of the Rutgers reputation,” Weber said.

After graduating with a degree in information technology and informatics, Amelia Khoo is heading to Seattle to work as a technical program manager.
