Prior to starting the doctoral program at SC&I, Leeam Azoulay worked for human rights and humanitarian organizations, mostly in advocacy roles. She lived and worked in East Africa from 2015-2020. Her research interests focus on how tech impacts human rights and political expression in the global south, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. This includes a range of issues including censorship, surveillance, and content moderation by social media platforms. She believes that the tech policies of governments and design choices of corporations — and their impact on people — need to be better understood. She writes the Substack newsletter Digital Fallout, which touches on these issues.
